About Timbavati Game Reserve

Timbavati is a nature reserve with open borders to the world-famous Kruger National Park. It is part of the Greater Kruger ecosystem, which offers an authentic wildlife experience guaranteed for all visitors. Timbavati is the perfect place for guests to experience once in a lifetime incredible Big Five encounters which are almost assured due to the extensive population of local wildlife.

Wildlife

Timbavati is part of the Greater Kruger National Park where animals roam freely throughout the different parks. There are no fences, which means that all the popular safari animals, such as the Big Five, can be seen in the park.

The Big Five consist of the African elephant, African lion, African leopard, Cape buffalo and the Black rhino. All of the Big Five can be spotted in the Timbavati Game Reserve and sightings tend to be of the highest quality. Cheetah and leopard sightings are possible but not as common in this reserve.

Timbavati is well known for its huge herds of buffalo, while lion and elephant can also be spotted very frequently. The park’s claim to fame is its white lion, a spectacular sight to encounter on your visit.

The earliest recorded sighting of the white lion was in the Timbavati region in 1938. However, the African elders say that these incredible animals survived in the habitat for centrioles before. The white lion is a rare and magical sight for those who are lucky enough to see it.

As well as the very popular Big Five, Timbavati is also home to many other wonderful species of animals. Some of these include Reedbuck, Kudu, Zebra, Cheetah, Wild Dog and Spotted Hyena, but these are just a few of the 200-different animal species found at Timbavati.

Bird Watching

An impressive 350 bird species have been recorded in the Timbavati, making it a birdwatchers paradise. As with most private game reserves, the main focus of the game drives are on mammals but if birds are what you’re after then book a private drive to focus on finding these incredible feathered creatures.

The combination of open vehicle drives and walking safaris is the ideal way to find many different animal species, while night drives might offer a few rarer sightings like nightjars, courses and owls.

Timbavati bird watching is good all year round, but by far the best time of year for quality birdwatching experiences comes with the migration of birds from Europe and North America, which usually takes place from November through to April. The drier months of June to September makes for the best general wildlife viewing.
